Scotchman Industries operates in Philip, built on decades of innovation and craftsmanship. The metal fabrication equipment manufacturer started in 1967 and continues to evolve as a business, creating hi-tech machinery.
Scotchman Industries builds machinery that cuts, shears, notches, punches, forms, or bends metal among other capabilities. Their signature ironworker and cold saw machines are utilized in fabrication shops globally to produce a diverse range of products and components.
Keeping up with growth
Scotchman partners with Golden West Technologies using the Technology Leadership service, including off-site server backups, wireless access points, network switches and maintenance, a phone system, and quarterly reviews to set and monitor cybersecurity goals and additional needs.
Brad Heltzel, the general manager of Scotchman Industries, knows the importance of dependability and technological know-how. For over 21 years, Brad has seen the company grow and keep up with the pace of technology, thanks in part to Golden West.
“Knowing the people and the support from Golden West is worth its weight in gold to me. That’s how I think of Golden West, and they’ve been a great partner over the years,” says Brad.
Efficient cybersecurity
Today, the company’s IT team focuses on other work without being required to keep up network maintenance and security alone. Wade Schofield, head of IT at Scotchman, explains even if a cyberattack were to take down the network, Golden West Technologies has all their data backed up and ready to maintain business continuity.
“It’s nice having somebody that has your back,” says Wade. “Before, if something went bad or down, it was all on me and it was stressful.”
Wade also explains Scotchman upgraded their phone system and switched to Golden West Technologies’ Hosted PBX. The new system allows Wade, Brad, and all the team members of Scotchman to effectively communicate with each other on complex projects.
Customer-focused care
Brad says much of Scotchman’s business involves specialized care for customers that have purchased their machinery. The entire team prides itself on the quality of both their fabrication equipment and their individualized customer service.
“Just because it’s not listed in our catalog doesn’t mean we can’t handle it,” explains Brad. “Our automation division has significantly expanded over the past few years and will remain a crucial aspect of Scotchman moving forward. I believe our capacity to engineer and create tailored products for our customers truly distinguishes us from our competitors.”
This personal approach has pushed companies from outside the United States to work with Scotchman for their care and personalization, including customers from Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand.
As an American-made company, Brad and his team are also proud to be advocates and sponsors of the Workshop for Warriors organization. As a veteran himself, Brad works to help veterans transition to and thrive in the manufacturing industry.
Generations of ingenuity
Deeply connected to the community, nearly all employees at Scotchman Industries hail from Philip or its neighboring areas. Brad shares that it’s nice having employees who come from strong families with a good Midwest work ethic.
“Several of our team members belong to families spanning multiple generations of Scotchman employees. It’s almost impossible to walk through any area of Scotchman and not find family connections between employees,” says Brad. “We are more than just a manufacturing facility; we also offer careers in engineering, accounting, inventory, purchasing, marketing and customer support.”
Scotchman Industries’ collaboration with Golden West Technologies guarantees they can serve their customers and local communities while ensuring cybersecurity — keeping Scotchman’s operations thriving, one precision solution at a time.
